Jalen Duren’s future with the Detroit Pistons has suddenly become one of the biggest storylines of the NBA offseason.

According to Sam Amick of The Athletic, the All-NBA center was reportedly underwhelmed by Detroit’s initial contract offer in restricted free agency. The gap between the two sides is significant enough that Duren is now expected to explore potential sign-and-trade scenarios if negotiations continue to stall.

That is a surprising development considering the breakout season Duren just completed.

The 22-year-old established himself as one of the league’s premier young centers, averaging 19.5 points and 10.5 rebounds while shooting an outstanding 65.0% from the field. His dominance around the rim earned him his first All-Star selection and a spot on the All-NBA Third Team.

Those honors dramatically changed his contract outlook.

Because of his All-NBA selection, Duren became eligible for a five-year, $287.1 million designated maximum extension worth 30 percent of the salary cap. League expectations entering free agency were that Duren would seek a contract averaging roughly $40 million annually.

Reports suggesting he was disappointed by Detroit’s opening proposal indicate the two sides remain well apart financially.

While the Pistons still hold significant leverage because Duren is a restricted free agent, a sign-and-trade could become an attractive solution if negotiations fail to gain momentum. Rather than risk an unhappy franchise cornerstone, Detroit could receive valuable assets while allowing Duren to secure the contract he desires elsewhere.

Not surprisingly, rival teams are already monitoring the situation closely.

Among the franchises consistently linked to Duren are the Los Angeles Lakers. The Lakers have spent the entire offseason searching for a long-term answer at center after Luka Doncic reportedly made acquiring an A-list big man one of his top requests.

Duren checks virtually every box. He is one of the NBA’s most explosive lob threats, an elite finisher around the basket, an outstanding rebounder, and young enough to grow alongside Doncic for years to come. His athleticism in the pick-and-roll would make him an ideal partner for one of basketball’s best playmakers.

The Pistons have previously pushed back against Los Angeles’ reported interest, with team sources effectively telling rivals to keep their hands off Duren. At the time, Detroit viewed him as a foundational piece of its future.

Now, contract negotiations have introduced a level of uncertainty that did not exist just a week ago.

There is still plenty of time for both sides to reach common ground, and restricted free agency continues to favor the Pistons. But if the financial gap remains as wide as reports suggest, sign-and-trade discussions are only likely to intensify.

For the Lakers and every other team searching for an elite young center, Duren’s contract standoff has suddenly become one of the offseason’s biggest situations to monitor.
