Boston Celtics superstar Jaylen Brown is currently one of the most frequently mentioned names in trade rumors circulating around the league. With many sources suggesting that his time in Boston has come to an end, Brown has increasingly been linked to different teams.

While several parties have been interested in acquiring Jaylen Brown, the Celtics’ high asking price has ensured that only legitimate suitors remain in the race. Despite this, however, there is a growing belief that Brown may not be worth the price placed on him.

ESPN’s Shams Charania touched upon this during a recent episode of “NBA Today.” When summarizing the Jaylen Brown trade saga, he stated:

“When you look at the value of a Jaylen Brown, and you’re the Celtics, you, of course, want a premium for a player like that. When you go out and offer Jaylen Brown and two first-round picks for Giannis Antetokounmpo, you’re looking at someone who you’ve deemed better than Giannis. So [when] you can’t get that player, you go out on the marketplace, and you want a premium package of draft assets.”

As Charania mentioned, after failing to land Giannis Antetokounmpo, the Celtics quickly pivoted to offloading Brown for multiple draft assets, with some reports suggesting they even asked for up to four first-round picks. When factoring this in, Charania continued:

“I can’t find a team right now that is willing at this moment to give up that amount of draft capital. So then it just becomes – are Brad Stevens and that front office fine trading away Jaylen Brown for, you know, potentially less than that? Potentially, you know, I had one GM say, ’40 cents on the dollar.’ That’s because that’s what it’s come down to in Boston. They just have not been able to find teams as of yet to get to that threshold, but there’s still a lot of time left in this offseason.”

Boston’s decision to demand significant draft compensation seems justified from the perspective of his performance last season. While he was easily the best player on the Celtics’ roster last season, averaging 28.7 points, 6.9 rebounds, and 5.1 assists per game on 47.7% shooting from the field and 34.7% from three-point range, Brown was also among the best in the league.

Having single-handedly led Boston to a 56-26 record (2nd in the East), Brown’s leadership and impact cannot be overstated. Unfortunately, given how the relationship between the superstar and the organization has deteriorated, rival executives are equally aware of Boston’s desperation to part with the five-time All-Star. This gives them enough leverage in trade conversations.

Needless to say, this isn’t a favorable situation for Jaylen Brown, who appears to be a victim of the trade machinery at this point. Unfortunately, the superstar is also a victim of analytics and how they represent him. ESPN’s Bobby Marks revealed that many league executives consider Brown to be a net negative player, commenting:

“There’s a spirited debate going around in front offices right now regarding Jaylen Brown. On one side, there’s the analytics debate, and the analytics do not view Brown as a high-level player. A negative net rating over the last four years in Boston, -10 when he was on the court this year. And then there’s the eye test, which I’m more in favor of, which is a player that finished sixth in MVP voting.”

As Marks mentioned, from an analytical perspective, Brown is far from being one of the league’s best players. In some ways, the reviews are brutal, as one executive even claimed that he was the seventh-best player on any team. On the flip side, the eye test is completely different, as Brown’s impact is equally felt on the stat sheet and the flow of the game.

In light of this, Brown finds himself in a difficult spot. Despite being a game-changing player and a high-value asset, the Celtics’ demands appear to be preventing a smooth exit from Boston. Although being traded remains inevitable, the timeline currently seems uncertain.
