LeBron James will return to play his 24th NBA season this October, but it’s unknown which jersey he’ll be wearing on opening night. At 41 years old, we know King James doesn’t have much longer to play, and that’s why he’s prioritized finding a winning situation to close out his storied career.
As it stands, there are three teams that are leading the race for James: the Warriors, Heat, and Cavaliers, who can provide LeBron with the situation he’s looking for. Apparently, there are also other teams in the pursuit, including the Minnesota Timberwolves, who have a noted interest in the four-time NBA champion.
“What’s more, the Warriors do not appear to have clarity yet regarding James’ plans,” reported Sam Amick. “Cleveland and Miami are often cited as realistic landing spots as well, and the Minnesota Timberwolves are known to have interest if he felt like shocking the basketball world with that sort of move.”
After leaving the Lakers, nobody expects LeBron to join the Timberwolves. Not only are they a small-market team, but they are also unaccomplished and inexperienced when it comes to playoff basketball. To date, the franchise has yet to make an NBA Finals appearance. The biggest allure for James is Anthony Edwards, who he has always been a major fan of.
“He has long been a fan of Anthony Edwards,” wrote Jon Krawczynski. “Coming to Minnesota to end a long championship drought would make an even stronger argument for GOAT status.”
While the Timberwolves may not be the most glamorous option for LeBron, it’s a place where he could compete on a stacked young roster. Alongside Edwards and Rudy Gobert at center, LeBron could take Minnesota where they’ve never been before. It would be a wild scenario, but one considered still unlikely at this time.
Similarly, the Washington Wizards have gotten involved with James. D.C. has never been a hot destination for free agents before, but their recent acquisitions of Trae Young and Anthony Davis (James’ former teammate) have put them in a position to contend next season. With LeBron James on the team, along with rookie AJ Dybantsa, the Wizards could become a major storyline in the East.
“The Wizards are quietly positioning themselves as a compelling wildcard in the sweepstakes for LeBron James,” reported Brandon ‘Scoop B’ Robinson.
As it stands, at least a dozen teams are trying to recruit LeBron, but he won’t sign with just anyone. For his final chapter, James will only sign with a team that can give him the ending he deserves. As a four-time champion, four-time MVP, and the NBA’s all-time leading scorer, LeBron has nothing left to prove, but that doesn’t mean he’s willing to waste what precious time he has left in the NBA.
So, whether it’s joining the Cavaliers, Warriors, or Timberwolves, nothing is off the table for LeBron in this pivotal offseason. Even a move to D.C. could be in the cards if they can somehow convince him that they have the most potential for success. It won’t be easy, but LeBron is expected to take his time, giving all teams an opportunity to strengthen their case.
