After eight years, LeBron James is finally moving on from the Lakers, but that doesn’t mean his time in the league is over. In fact, even at 41 years old, James is one of the NBA’s most coveted free agents, and multiple teams are planning to make their pitch.
For James, however, his next team will not be a random choice. This offseason, he intends to take his time and pick a situation that satisfies his requirements. According to the latest reports, his only demand is being in a winning situation where he can play meaningful games.
“I’m told he’s going to be open-minded and patient for his next team,” reported Chris Hayes on NBA TV. “The one component a team is going to have to have to secure his service, from what I’m told, is the team has to be competitive and have a realistic chance at winning. The three teams I mentioned (Heat, Warriors, Cavaliers) you can pretty much look and see which of those 3 has the best shot at winning. Money wasn’t mentioned.”
While many teams are interested in LeBron, only a few teams are in a situation to convince him to sign: the Warriors, Heat, and Cavaliers. While James would have to take a pay cut to join any of those teams, money is secondary right now as he and his inner circle begin discussions on his next move.
“This decision was about LeBron, his happiness, and his family’s happiness. I know that several members of LeBron’s inner circle are going to meet him in Ohio this week, and they’re going to have a discussion on what the decision will be,” said ESPN’s Dave McMenamin on NBA Today.
We don’t know which way LeBron is leaning, but the Cavaliers are considered the favorites right now given their history with James, his ties to the area, and their status as a contender in the East. Still, that won’t stop GMs from making offers, and at least 12 of them have expressed interest in a deal for the four-time champion.
“I’m told happiness is the biggest factor in his decision to leave and pursue his next team. His mindset is not believed to be driven by finances,” reported Shams Charania on NBA Today. “He felt the relationship had run its course, and he felt at times that the Lakers’ championship mindset did not match his. A dozen teams will call and try to pitch LeBron James on coming, most of them being contenders, obviously. But when I talk to teams around the league, there are a few that really stand out that could give LeBron James a compelling pitch.”
At this point, LeBron has made his priorities clear. With a net worth of over $1 billion, money will be the last thing on his mind as he considers where to spend the next (and likely final) chapter of his NBA career. It’s all about winning and personal prosperity for the King, but he’s in no rush to make up his mind.
With no timeline tying him down, James is free to decide at his own pace, and he’s going to take many things into consideration. Either way, in what will likely be the last team switch of his career, James cannot afford to make a mistake, and that’s why he’ll think twice before making any formal commitment for his 24th season.
