LeBron James is the most coveted free agent available right now, but he’s in no rush to pick his next team. At 41 years old, with 23 seasons in the NBA, James has earned the right to decide his own ending.

We already know that the King is committed to playing for the 2026-27 campaign, and many fans believe that’s when his story will end. According to his agent Rich Paul, however, LeBron has not decided that next season will be his last. As long as his family approves, and his body holds up, there’s no set limit to how long James will play.

“Who says this is going to be his last year? He’s had that (documentary crew) for the last 4 years. No one said this is going to be his last year. Also, once he got the green light from Savannah and Zhuri, you can do whatever you want to do,” said Paul on the ‘Game Over’ podcast. “I’ve heard from- the other day I said 10-12 teams; I counted today. Outside of one organization, maybe two, I’ve heard from every organization in the league.”

As James has gotten closer to the end of his career, he’s rejected long-term contracts in favor of shorter deals. This allows him to plan his future one season at a time, without committing beyond what he’s ready to give. What determines if he comes back is less about money and more about whether he’s willing to spend another season away from his family. Not having Bronny and Bryce at home certainly makes it easier, but he still needs approval from Savannah and Zhuri.

Fortunately for the NBA, LeBron has gotten all the approval he needs to return for his 24th season, and now it’s just a matter of choosing where to spend it. According to Paul, nearly every team in the league has called up about the King, proving that demand for his services remains higher than ever (especially at a discount).

As it stands, we don’t know which way LeBron is leaning, but he’s considering multiple teams, including the Warriors, Cavaliers, Heat, Spurs, and 76ers. Rather than chase the bag, James’ biggest priority is finding a place where he can win and play meaningful games on a regular basis. That’s all he’s playing for at this point, after averaging 20.9 points, 6.1 rebounds, 7.2 assists, 1.2 steals, and 0.6 blocks per game this past season.

When it comes to the timing of LeBron’s retirement, it can’t be too far off now. Over the past few years, we’ve seen his production dip as he went from a first option down to the third option. He’s also open to taking a significant pay cut for the first time in his career, proving his value isn’t quite what it used to be. Even so, LeBron has already broken all precedent for longevity, and it could be years before we see him finally walk away.

What that means is the team that signs James this summer won’t just have him on a rental. They will likely have at least two years to try and make a run, more than enough time to justify making the space to bring him in.
