At 41 years old, LeBron James is the summer’s most coveted free agent, and as many as 12 teams have called to make their pitch to the four-time champion. While new surprise teams emerge every day, the race is still believed to be between four teams: the Heat, 76ers, Warriors and Cavaliers.
For a while, the Warriors were considered the favorites over every team, but the situation has changed as the summer has progressed. Now, according to the latest reports, there’s increasing belief that LeBron is leaning toward rejoining the Cleveland Cavaliers for his 24th season.
“James has been spotted in Northeast Ohio multiple times over the past week, which has only amplified the notion that he is indeed strongly weighing a third stint with the Cavaliers,” wrote NBA insiders Marc Stein and Jake Fischer. “Yet there is certainly a growing belief among teams competing for James’ signature that the lure of the 41-year-old playing out his final chapter with the team that drafted him — compared to, say, early favorites Golden State — is looking more and more like the scenario to beat.”
This offseason is uncharted territory for LeBron James, and we know he’s going to take his time with his decision. After averaging 20.9 points, 6.1 rebounds, 7.2 assists, 1.2 steals, and 0.6 blocks per game on 51.5% shooting and 31.7% shooting from three in 2025-26, we know he can still play elite-level basketball, and it likely played a role in his choice to postpone his retirement for at least one more year.
The question now for James is which team he will join to finish his career. While only LeBron can say how he feels about each situation, we know his biggest priority involves finding “basketball happiness,” which essentially means a place where he can play meaningful games in a big role.
If that’s true, it’s no wonder the Cavaliers are so high on the list. This is a team that won 64 games two seasons ago before making a run to the Conference Finals in 2026. With Donovan Mitchell, James Harden, Evan Mobley, and Jarrett Allen, they have (arguably) the best core group of LeBron’s other considerations.
With LeBron at the three, he’d be a perfect fit, lending his iconic leadership, brilliant IQ, and timeless shot-making to a position the Cavaliers have been looking to fill for years. If we’re talking about storylines, LeBron going back home to finish things out where it started is the perfect ending.
The only catch? James would have to take a significant pay cut to join the Cavs, surely less than he’s ever earned before. Regardless, with LeBron’s focus on winning, he might be willing to take the minimum if the Cavaliers can sell him on their vision.
For now, with so many teams in the running, it’s impossible to be sure where the King will end up. But as a four-time champion, four-time MVP, and NBA GOAT candidate, there’s no doubt he’s earned the right to dictate how his story ends, and what better way than with the team that’s defined most of his storied career?
