The summer of 2026 has already been very active, with multiple trades in the books before the start of free agency. Among the list of players who need to strike a deal is veteran swingman Rui Hachimura, a 6’8″ Lakers forward seeking at least $25 million per year.
As it stands, Rui’s future remains uncertain, but there are two teams that have drawn heavy ties to the former ninth overall pick: the Brooklyn Nets and San Antonio Spurs, who are in two very different positions in the NBA title chase.
“Brooklyn keeps coming up as a likely suitor, too, for the Lakers’ Rui Hachimura,” reported Marc Stein and Jake Fischer. “The Nets and Spurs are two teams we’ve heard have interest in adding Hachimura’s services, while the Spurs are also faced with resolving Harrison Barnes’ future as the veteran forward heads to unrestricted free agency.”
Rui is one of five unrestricted free agents on the Lakers, which also includes LeBron James, Jaxson Hayes, Luke Kennard, and Maxi Kleber. With up to $52.1 million in cap space this summer (assuming Ayton opts in), the Lakers have a level of flexibility they haven’t seen in years, and it puts them in a unique position to overhaul the roster around their new superstar, Luka Doncic.
Where that leaves Rui is uncertain at this time, but he’s a player who will generate plenty of interest in free agency. This past season, in 68 games, he averaged 11.5 points, 3.3 rebounds, 0.8 assists, 0.6 steals, and 0.3 blocks per game on 51.4% shooting and 44.3% shooting from three. In the right situation, he could thrive as a versatile wing who can play both ends of the floor. Where he ends up will likely depend on where he feels he can most succeed.
On the Nets, Rui would have an opportunity to take on a bigger role for a team still forming its identity. Alongside Michael Porter Jr., Julius Randle, and Terance Mann, he would not be in a position to win the championship, but the Nets could still be somewhat competitive in an Eastern Conference that’s relatively weak overall.
Essentially, the Spurs present the opposite situation for Rui. Fresh off a Finals run, they already have their core in place, and Rui would only be adding to a dynasty in the making. Alongside Victor Wembanyama and Dylan Harper, Hachimura’s versatile skill set would be welcomed as a fitting replacement for Harrison Barnes.
In the end, only Hachimura can say what qualities will be most important to him this summer, but there’s no doubt familiarity and a chance to win will rank highly. That’s why we cannot rule out a return to the Lakers. Despite their ambitions for more lucrative additions, it may not be so easy to find a replacement for one of their most important role players.
For Rui, it’s going to take some time for the process to play out, but he won’t be lacking for options. Whether he wants to return to the Lakers or try something new, this summer will be a turning point in his career that changes everything coming after.
