Shannon Sharpe gave his thoughts on the LeBron James sweepstakes, and one of the biggest surprises is that he left out one of the biggest contenders that is considered a frontrunner in the race.
Speaking on the Nightcap podcast, Sharpe ranked his top 4 landing spots for LeBron as the Miami Heat, Cleveland Cavaliers, Denver Nuggets and the Minnesota Timberwolves. But he left out the Philadelphia 76ers, who are viewed as one of the favorites to acquire LeBron after landing Jaylen Brown in a blockbuster deal. And he explained why.
“So for me, I’d rank them like this: Heat, No. 1. Cavaliers, No. 2. Nuggets, No. 3. Timberwolves, No. 4. The reason I can’t put Philly higher is there’s just too much uncertainty with Joel Embiid. Based on his history, Joe, what’s the absolute best we can realistically hope for? Fifty-five games? And then what do we see in the postseason? He played one series and did what?”
It’s hard to dismiss Sharpe’s concerns.
On paper, the Sixers have the most talented roster in the league. A lineup featuring Tyrese Maxey, Jaylen Brown, Joel Embiid and LeBron would instantly become the favorite to win the Eastern Conference. The problem is Embiid’s health, who has played only in 96 games in total over the last three seasons.
And that’s why Sharpe preferred Miami.
The Heat changed the entire NBA landscape when they landed Giannis Antetokounmpo in a blockbuster deal. It gives LeBron a chance to reunite with the franchise where he won his first two titles. They offer championship experience, a strong organisational culture and a great coaching staff.
The Cavaliers are not far behind.
A return home to Cleveland would instantly create one of the biggest stories in the NBA. Donovan Mitchell, James Harden, Evan Mobley and Jarrett Allen give one of the deepest cores today. Recent reports suggest the Cavaliers could be open to making room for Bronny James if LeBron decides to come home.
The Nuggets are also a great basketball fit.
Pairing LeBron with Nikola Jokic would create one of the smartest offensive duos ever. They also have a strong supporting cast, which makes them an attractive option for LeBron.
Then there are the Timberwolves.
They have quietly emerged as a serious contender after landing LaMelo Ball in a stunning move. They have started to ramp up their pursuit and have reportedly made a bold pitch centering around the GOAT debate.
Sharpe missed out on the Warriors, who have continued to pursue LeBron and are looking to make an aggressive trade that can strengthen their pitch. The Knicks have also checked in, but recent comments from Rich Paul made an admission that New York winning the title had made the scenario less realistic.
The Sixers still remain the biggest omission. They still remain a frontrunner, but Sharpe has concerns about Embiid’s ability to stay on the floor.
As LeBron weighs his options, every team offers something different. But Sharpe’s list made one thing clear: star power alone isn’t enough. Durability may end up deciding where LeBron plays next.
