LeBron James would have already joined the New York Knicks this offseason if one thing had gone differently. According to Rich Paul, that was the Knicks winning the 2026 NBA Title.
Speaking on the Game Over podcast, Paul explained why the Knicks’ title win changed everything around LeBron’s free agency.
“Look, it’s difficult, right? Because the last thing you want to do is mess something like that up. The Knicks have a good thing going. If the Knicks hadn’t won, there’d be no question. He’d be going to the Knicks.”
For years, Madison Square Garden has been viewed as the perfect stage for a player like LeBron. But the Knicks’ title win made them a less realistic choice, even if they remain interested in adding him as a free agent.
Rich Paul explained why.
“Here’s the thing. LeBron has been part of championship teams where new players came in. When LeBron joins your team, I don’t care if you just won a championship or if you’ve been the best player. It’s different.”
“His enterprise value and everything he brings is different. Mike Brown knows that. And I respect the fact that he, and everyone else, wouldn’t want to mess up what the Knicks have built. Jalen Brunson would literally have to pick up the phone and say, ‘Hey man, I’ve got no issue with it.’ I’m not saying that would make LeBron’s decision. But at least it would put the Knicks on the table.”
“One thing is for sure, though. You want to respect what those guys have built. And it’s Jalen Brunson’s team. You want to respect that. He’s earned that right.”
The Knicks finally broke through this season, beating the San Antonio Spurs 4-1 in the 2026 NBA Finals. Jalen Brunson cemented himself as the face of the franchise by winning the Finals MVP, while Karl-Anthony Towns, Mikal Bridges, OG Anunoby and Josh Hart formed one of the league’s deepest starting lineups.
The team belongs to Brunson now, and he deserves that. And LeBron does not want to uproot him or hinder team chemistry. LeBron is at the end of his career and understands that talent alone isn’t enough to win a title.
There are financial obstacles too. The Knicks are hard-capped at the NBA’s second apron, meaning they can only realistically offer LeBron James a veteran minimum contract. Team owner James Dolan has said that he does not want to enter the second apron at any cost.
There is also a perception problem. If LeBron joins the defending champions, he would be hammered with the ‘ring-chasing’ narrative that has followed him throughout his career.
For Knicks fans, seeing LeBron wearing blue and orange would have felt like the dream scenario for years. But winning the championship may be the very reason that dream may never come true.
