The Giannis Antetokounmpo saga finally appears to be nearing its end. After more than a year of speculation, trade rumors, and behind-the-scenes negotiations, ESPN senior NBA insider Shams Charania reported that a resolution between Giannis Antetokounmpo and the Milwaukee Bucks is expected before Tuesday night’s NBA Draft.
According to Charania, the Bucks have narrowed their focus to two finalists: the Boston Celtics and the Miami Heat.
That alone says everything about where this process stands. For months, teams like the Timberwolves, Warriors, Rockets, Lakers, and Trail Blazers were connected to Antetokounmpo. Now the field has reportedly been reduced to two Eastern Conference rivals with vastly different trade packages.
“Sources tell me a trade and a resolution involving the Milwaukee Bucks and Giannis Antetokounmpo is expected before the NBA Draft on Tuesday night. The Bucks are in serious conversations with two finalists, the Miami Heat and the Boston Celtics. Both teams are among Giannis’ preferred trade destinations, but the packages being discussed are very different.”
“The variance between the deals is significant. Boston’s offer is centered around a Jaylen Brown-led package. It’s built around a veteran superstar-caliber player. Miami’s offer, meanwhile, is centered around a group of cost-controlled players on rookie-scale contracts, along with significant draft capital.’
“I do want to make this clear, though. Whichever deal happens, whether it’s today or tomorrow, it’s expected to be a direct two-team trade. It will involve Milwaukee and likely one of these two teams. There is currently no third-team or fourth-team structure involved. That could always change later.”
“Remember when Kevin Durant was traded a year ago in June? The deal initially involved only two teams but eventually expanded to seven teams by the end of the offseason. Something similar could happen here. These negotiations have been intense.”
“We know the Giannis situation has been ongoing for about 13 months. The Bucks engaged in conversations at the trade deadline and have been open to discussions since the draft combine in May. Right now, they’ve narrowed their focus to these two teams. My understanding is that Giannis is ready to be traded, either to Boston or Miami. We’ll see what happens over the next 24 hours.”
The contrast between the two offers could not be more different.
Boston’s proposal is reportedly centered around Jaylen Brown, a six-time All-Star who finished sixth in MVP voting this season, and future draft picks. Brown averaged 28.7 points, 6.9 rebounds, and 5.1 assists while shooting 47.7% from the field and remains one of the NBA’s elite two-way wings. Milwaukee would immediately receive a superstar-level replacement capable of keeping the team competitive.
Miami’s package takes the opposite approach.
The Heat are believed to be offering a combination of young players on rookie-scale contracts, significant draft capital, and win-now talent. Tyler Herro would likely headline the package, while players such as Kel’el Ware and Jaime Jaquez Jr. have frequently been mentioned as key pieces.
The Heat also possesses future first-round picks and swap rights that align with Milwaukee’s reported desire for draft compensation.
The Bucks appear ready for a massive organizational reset. Reports continue to suggest that Kyle Kuzma could be included in any Giannis deal as Milwaukee attempts to clean up its salary structure. Bobby Portis has also been mentioned in various reports as a possible outgoing piece. The organization seems determined to maximize the return while simultaneously reshaping the roster.
For Boston, acquiring Giannis would create arguably the most dominant star duo in basketball alongside Jayson Tatum. For Miami, pairing Antetokounmpo with Bam Adebayo would instantly give the Heat one of the league’s most intimidating frontcourts.
After 13 months of uncertainty, endless rumors, and constant speculation, the NBA may finally be less than 48 hours away from learning where Giannis Antetokounmpo will play next.
