Anthony Davis‘ future with the Washington Wizards may not be as secure as many assumed. While Wizards president Michael Winger recently stated that Davis wants to remain in Washington, new reporting from NBA insider Jake Fischer suggests there could be another layer developing behind the scenes.

According to Fischer, Davis and his representatives are seeking a maximum contract extension worth $175.4 million, and that demand could eventually force Washington to explore the trade market.

It is a situation worth monitoring closely. Davis remains one of the most talented big men in basketball when healthy. Last season, he played in just 20 games, but he averaged 20.4 points, 11.1 rebounds, 2.8 assists, 1.1 steals, and 1.6 blocks per game, shooting 50.6% from the field. Even at 33 years old, he continues to impact games on both ends of the floor with his scoring, rebounding, rim protection, and defensive versatility. Players with that type of skill set rarely become available.

The question is whether Washington is willing to commit another massive long-term contract to a player entering the later stages of his career. That is where things become complicated.

The Wizards are building around a young core that already includes Trae Young, Alex Sarr, Tre Johnson, and the No. 1 overall pick. Washington has made it clear that it wants to compete immediately, but it also needs to maintain long-term flexibility around its emerging young stars.

Giving Davis a maximum extension would represent a significant financial commitment. According to Fischer, that reality could make Davis a potential trade candidate despite public statements suggesting both sides want to continue the partnership.

One team already being linked to Davis is the Portland Trail Blazers.

Fischer reported that Portland is expected to have interest if Davis becomes available. The Trail Blazers have been aggressive in exploring star-level additions and continue searching for veteran talent capable of accelerating their timeline.

Portland is hardly alone. Over the past several months, Davis has been connected to numerous trade rumors. The Clippers have surfaced in speculative discussions. The Houston Rockets have been linked through various blockbuster trade concepts. The Golden State Warriors have also appeared in reports exploring veteran stars who could potentially elevate their championship aspirations.

Even the Lakers continue to be mentioned whenever Davis trade speculation emerges.

That possibility feels highly unlikely right now, but it illustrates how much respect Davis still commands around the league. The timing of these rumors is particularly interesting because Washington appears committed to building a contender around Trae Young.

Young recently agreed to a four-year, $212 million contract extension to remain with the Wizards long-term. That move signaled organizational stability and a commitment to winning. However, it also places additional pressure on the front office to maximize every roster decision moving forward.

A max extension for Davis could impact future flexibility.

Washington must decide whether committing huge money to a player in his mid-30s aligns with the timeline of players like Dybantsa, Sarr, and Johnson. From Davis’ perspective, seeking a maximum extension is understandable.

Elite players almost always pursue the largest contract available, especially when they still perform at an All-Star level. Davis has earned that right through a career that includes 10 All-Star selections, five All-NBA honors, an NBA championship, and years as one of the league’s premier two-way players.

The Wizards now face a difficult decision. They can meet Davis’ contract demands and continue building around him alongside Young. Or they can explore the trade market while his value remains high and potentially add even more young assets to their growing core.

For now, Washington continues to publicly project confidence that Davis wants to stay. But if extension talks stall, the trade rumors surrounding the veteran superstar could become one of the biggest storylines of the offseason.
