Trae Young is staying exactly where he wanted to be. According to ESPN’s Shams Charania, Young intends to sign a four-year contract worth approximately $212 million with the Washington Wizards after declining his $49 million player option.

The deal will include a player option in the fourth year and represents a major commitment from both sides as Washington continues building around its emerging core. More importantly, it confirms what many around the league have believed for months. Young wanted to remain in Washington.

That commitment is significant considering how unusual Young’s journey to Washington has been. The four-time All-Star appeared in only 15 games during the 2025-26 season after suffering an MCL sprain. He played just five games in a Wizards uniform after arriving from Atlanta, meaning fans barely got a glimpse of what he could bring to the franchise.

Even so, Washington clearly believes he is the face of its future. When healthy, Young remains one of the NBA’s elite offensive engines. Last season, he averaged 17.9 points and 8.0 assists while shooting 45.8% from the field. Those numbers do not fully capture his impact, considering the injury-shortened campaign.

Over his career, Young has averaged 25.1 points, 9.8 assists, and 3.4 rebounds while shooting 43.3% from the floor and 35.2% from three-point range. Few guards in the league can match his combination of scoring, playmaking, and offensive creativity. The contract also provides clarity on Washington’s long-term direction.

The Wizards already possess one of the most intriguing young foundations in basketball. Alex Sarr continues to develop into a potential franchise cornerstone. Tre Johnson has shown significant promise. Washington also owns the No. 1 overall pick, giving the organization another elite young talent to add alongside its existing core.

The timing could not be better. For years, Washington has been stuck between rebuilding and competing. This move signals a clear direction. The Wizards now have an established All-Star point guard, an elite veteran big man in Anthony Davis, one of the league’s most promising young cores, and the top pick in the draft.

Young could have tested free agency. He could have listened to rival teams. Instead, he doubled down on Washington. Now the pressure shifts to the Wizards’ front office to continue building a roster capable of turning that commitment into sustained playoff success.
