The first week of free agency has seen some notable moves. Although there are still some big names on the market that are likely to be moved in the coming days, there is no doubt that teams will keep their eyes peeled for any activity involving LeBron James.
After communicating his desire to test the waters of free agency, LeBron James drew significant interest from suitors. Although this list has been narrowed down considerably, a recent update from NBA insider Chris Haynes suggests that James won’t meet with any of the teams before making his decision.
“As of right now, there are no plans for LeBron to engage in any meetings to allow teams to pitch him on the idea of coming to their prospective teams,” Haynes began. “What I’m told is that his agent, Rich Paul, is doing all the background work. He’s talking with teams, and then he, in return he will relay all the intel and data to LeBron James, in which LeBron will make a decision.”
This seems to be an interesting approach by James. Typically, conversations with teams and management are an ideal way to understand a franchise’s culture, its goals, and how good a fit it would be. However, James seems to be leaving the entire process in Rich Paul‘s hands.
Given LeBron James’ 23 years of NBA experience, bypassing such formalities seems understandable. Still, with winning a title being a priority for the 41-year-old, it would seem sensible to be more involved in the process.
Is Rich Paul Pulling The Strings In The LeBron James Sweepstakes?
It comes as no surprise that Rich Paul will be leading all conversations with potential suitors involving LeBron James. As the superstar’s agent, Paul wields considerable influence and also possesses significant experience.
While it would be safe to say that Paul is pulling the strings at this point, it is worth noting how much of an impact this could have on James’ ultimate decision.
Last week, Rich Paul uploaded a photo of a whiteboard listing the teams James was considering as potential landing spots. Among these, Paul highlighted five teams as frontrunners. These were, namely, the Philadelphia 76ers, Milwaukee Bucks, Minnesota Timberwolves, Denver Nuggets, and Cleveland Cavaliers.
Although the Golden State Warriors were also viewed as a suitor for LeBron James, the Warriors appear to have fallen out of favor. Now, recent reports suggest the Cavaliers are in the lead, as James has been spotted in Ohio multiple times over the past week.
Following Rich Paul’s post, teams have been amping up their efforts to land the 41-year-old superstar. If James doesn’t intend to meet with them, however, finding ways to convince Paul would prove to be a more worthwhile venture.
Despite the recent traction, though, Paul revealed that James is unlikely to announce his move anytime soon. With a lot of offseason left to go, James is likely to bide his time and weigh his options before finalizing his decision.
