The Giannis Antetokounmpo trade saga is finally over as the Milwaukee Bucks have traded the Greek superstar to the Miami Heat tonight in a blockbuster trade that sent four players, four draft picks, and one pick swap to Milwaukee. NBA insider Shams Charania first broke the news on social media.
“BLOCKBUSTER: The Milwaukee Bucks are trading franchise icon Giannis Antetokounmpo and Bobby Portis to the Miami Heat for Tyler Herro, Kel’el Ware, Jaime Jaquez Jr., Kasparas Jakucionis, 3 first-round picks (including No. 13), 1 pick swap and 1 second-rounder, sources tell ESPN,” wrote Charania.
“The Heat are sending to Milwaukee unprotected first-rounders in 2031 and 2033 along with No. 13, a pick swap in 2030, and a 2033 second-rounder, according to sources. The trade does not include any additional teams — it is a one-to-one move, sources said — but both the Heat and Bucks will execute the deal on July 6, which leaves the framework open to see if there are opportunities to expand,” he further added.
“Heat’s president Pat Riley now makes his long-anticipated new landmark acquisition, with Antetokounmpo joining elite Miami pickups such as LeBron James, Shaquille O’Neal, Chris Bosh, Alonzo Mourning, and Jimmy Butler over the past 30-plus years. Riley will pair the two-time NBA MVP and 2021 Finals MVP with Bam Adebayo to lead contention in the Eastern Conference.”
“After informing teams that they were open for business at the NBA draft combine in May, Bucks general manager Jon Horst landed a haul with the Heat’s offer that brings high-level starting/rotation players and young talent, as well as significant draft capital.”
“The Celtics aggressively pursued Giannis, offering Milwaukee a package featuring 2024 Finals MVP Jaylen Brown and two first-round picks, sources tell ESPN. The Bucks seriously negotiated with two finalists in recent weeks: Miami and Boston, which were both on Antetokounmpo’s list of preferred destinations,” Charania concluded on X.
The nine-time All-Star ended the Bucks phase of his career, averaging 24.1 points, 9.9 rebounds, and 5.0 assists while shooting 55.4% from the field over 13 seasons and 895 games played.
NBA fans saw this news on social media and went berserk over the news that the two-time MVP was finally heading to Miami, ending a trade saga that began after the Bucks’ exit from the 2024-25 playoffs.
“Celtics thought they had a blockbuster trade,” wrote fans who trolled the Celtics for nearly securing the Greek superstar’s services.
“The best thing that could happen for Boston haters.”
“Thank god we are keeping Jaylen,” wrote the Celtics fans who did not want to trade their star player.
“This is the best Miami has done since LeBron joined in 2010,” wrote relieved fans of the Heat, who finally have their whale like Pat Riley promised.
“Giannis is taking his talents to South Beach!”
“Both teams have lost this trade. The Heat are not built around Giannis.”
“So he’s joining another garbage team but with better weather?”
The Bucks were mainly seeking three key elements in their negotiations for Antetokounmpo’s trade: a win-now player, promising young players, and draft assets. And the Heat’s package addresses all the elements they were looking for while retaining Bam Adebayo, their star player.
A win-now player: Tyler Herro, three promising young players: Kel’el Ware, Jaime Jaquez Jr., and Kasparas Jakucionis, and four draft picks, which include the No. 13 pick of the 2026 NBA Draft, two unprotected first-round picks (2031 and 2033), and one second-round pick (2033).
But in this process, they have severely gutted their player-rotation and will have to rebuild around him. As visible from the reactions of the fans, the main concern that still remains for Giannis Antetokounmpo is whether the Heat have become championship contenders with him joining the roster.
Several media experts, like Bill Simmons and others, expressed their concerns that Antetokounmpo would face the same problems in Miami that he did in Milwaukee in terms of having championship-caliber players around him.
It will certainly be intriguing to see how the Heat add roster pieces around Antetokounmpo and Bam Adebayo in the summer. It will take some time to objectively say which team won the trade, depending on the impact of the assets. But for now, the saga is finally over, and the Heat have something to look forward to in the coming season.
