Giannis Antetokounmpo‘s time with the Milwaukee Bucks has officially come to an end. After an extended period of trade interest, the Miami Heat have finally acquired the 10-time All-Star in a blockbuster deal featuring several young players and draft picks.
The Heat succeeded in their pursuit of Giannis Antetokounmpo, but they were far from being alone in the race. With the Boston Celtics making a compelling case as a landing spot, many even rated the Celtics as favorites.
Although the Bucks eventually opted for the Heat’s offer, possibly because of the draft capital and young talent included in the package, the Celtics’ offer seems equally tempting. X user Legion Hoops revealed Boston’s trade offer, tweeting:
“REPORT: The Celtics offered Jaylen Brown, two 1st-round picks, and more for Giannis. The Bucks declined, and are sending Giannis to Miami.”
ESPN’s Shams Charania also built upon this, highlighting why the Bucks rejected Boston’s offer:
“The hold up in those conversations ultimately became [that] the Bucks wanted more assets, a couple of young players like Hugo Gonzales, Baylor Scheierman, and potentially others. They wanted more first-round picks and swaps. There was a middle ground there, but at the end of the day, my understanding is the Celtics weren’t willing to part with enough young players and assets to get a deal done.”
Celtics superstar Jaylen Brown was rumored to be on the trade block, specifically in a deal that would involve Giannis Antetokounmpo. Despite his phenomenal performance for Boston last season, the five-time All-Star appears to have fallen out of favor with the organization.
In the days leading up to the trade, it seemed likely that the Celtics would succeed in swapping Brown for Antetokounmpo. To that point, earlier on Monday night, Brown had reportedly made peace with the notion of playing for the Bucks next season. Fortunately (or unfortunately), this has not come to pass.
In a follow-up report, NBA insider Kevin O’Connor revealed that Bucks owner Jimmy Haslam played a key role in rejecting the Celtics’ offer. This was largely due to the fear that Brown would demand a trade shortly after joining the team.
“Haslam didn’t want to risk Jaylen Brown wanting out of Milwaukee in a year after dealing with Giannis and Myles Garrett trade demands,” O’Connor wrote. “Haslam wanted certainty, and the Miami deal provided more of that with more total assets in return to Milwaukee.”
Haslam’s fear seems justified. With the Bucks effectively embracing a rebuild, it becomes virtually impossible to convince a player like Jaylen Brown, who is in his prime, to play for a team that isn’t actively contending for the title.
In this regard, not being traded to Milwaukee may have been the best possible outcome for Brown. However, given how events have transpired between Brown and the Celtics’ front office, it can be assumed that their relationship isn’t great either.
Before the Giannis Antetokounmpo trade, ESPN’s Brian Windhorst suggested that Brown would be traded regardless of whether the Bucks accepted the Celtics’ offer or not. Now, with the Celtics’ first plan falling through, Shams Charania reported on the situation concerning Brown.
“If you’re Boston, there is going to be some fallout from this,” Charania noted. “For the second time in four years, the Celtics have offered Jaylen Brown, their co-star with Jayson Tatum, in a trade… The tables are a little different now because Brown was a Finals MVP. He just came off a year where he was an MVP finalist. So, there are going to be some conversations moving forward. Jaylen Brown is extension eligible in July, and we will see where things go from here.”
Although Brown remains with the Celtics, his future with the franchise seems uncertain.
There haven’t been many teams that have shown an interest in pursuing Jaylen Brown this summer, but in light of what has transpired, this could change, too. With trade rumors linking Brown to franchises like the Los Angeles Clippers, the New Orleans Pelicans, and even the Detroit Pistons, there is no telling what new possibilities could emerge in the coming days.
